Title:

Whisper of the Lost Boy

Why this title:

This title reflects Eren’s gentle whispers that only Lily can hear. He is a lost boy who exists between reality and illusion, representing Lily’s loneliness and emotional struggle. His whispers become both comfort and pain in Lily’s life.

Conflict:

The story presents two main conflicts.

Character vs. Self:

Lily struggles with her own mind, hallucinations, and fear of letting Eren go.

Character vs. Society:

Lily faces judgment and misunderstanding from people around her, who see her as strange instead of understanding her pain.

FREYTAG’S PYRAMID

1. Exposition

Lily lives in an unhealthy family and feels deeply lonely.

She begins seeing and hearing a ghost named Eren.

Eren becomes the only “friend” who makes her feel alive.

2. Rising Action

Lily talks to Eren more often, even in public.

People start to think Lily is weird.

Her mental condition worsens, Eren’s presence became rare.

Lily’s family notices something is wrong and becomes worried.

3. Climax

Lily is taken to a psychiatrist and diagnosed with Hallucination Disorder.

She is forced to attend therapy and can no longer “talk” with Eren.

Eren slowly fades, leaving only his voices behind.

    Lily feels broken.

4. Falling Action

Lily’s family starts to truly support her.

She tries to fight Eren’s whispers, following the doctor’s advice.

Day by day, she opens up to her classmates and the real world.

Lily starts to feel a little stronger than before.

5. Resolution

For the last time, Eren appears one last time and gives his message.

    He disappears completely.

Lily decides to keep living, carrying Eren’s memory as her strength.

She promises to stay strong and not let herself break again.

Thank you for taking the time to read this story. Through Whisper of the Lost Boy, I hope to remind you that mental health matters and that no one should face their struggles alone. A little support, understanding, and kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Please be gentle with others, and with yourself.

Short Animation Review: Hope (2020)

Hi friends! 💗 Welcome back to my mini blog. How are you? Hope you’re doing well! This time, I want to share with you short animation named Hope.

Before diving into the short film “Hope” (2020), I discovered that it was created by Abdulla Al-Janahi in collaboration with GreenTree Production and Lumine Studio. Realizing that it blends art with an environmental cause made me curious to see how a simple turtle’s journey could reflect our own responsibility toward nature.

While watching “Hope” (2020), I was struck by both the beauty of the ocean setting and the fragility of the baby turtle’s journey. But, the sorrowful side is when i saw a baby turtle struggling. I felt the weight of its fight. The scene where Aqua was tried to help other turtle trapped in plastic made me ache inside, as if the ocean’s sadness reached me too. It was more than animation, it was a quiet reminder of how fragile life becomes in our careless world.

1. Theme / Massage

The main theme of Hope (2020) is about holding on to hope and finding the courage to survive against all odds. As Aqua, the baby turtle, makes its way to the sea, it must overcome countless obstacles, from predators to plastic waste, a reflection of human carelessness. The moment when Aqua tries to free another turtle trapped in plastic reveals just how fragile life is in a polluted ocean. Yet within that sadness lies the deeper meaning of “hope”, that as long as hope exists, there is strength to endure, to rise, and to spark change for a better world.

2. Narrative Structure

Beginning

The film begins on a quiet beach where dozens of turtle eggs crack open under the soft light of dawn. Among the tiny hatchlings is Aqua, the little turtle who will guide us through the story. From the very first moment, we see their urgent mission: to cross the sandy shore and reach the safety of the ocean.

Conflict

Conflict began to arise when Aqua tried to reach the ocean. What should have been a simple journey turned into one full of obstacles. As he crawled towards the coast, he faced various threats. Along the way, Aqua saw plastic waste and snack wrappers scattered about, blocking his path and posing a danger to himself and other turtles. Not to mention, a bird of prey appeared from the sky, ready to swoop down at any moment. The threats from human waste and natural predators made Aqua's journey even more difficult.

Climax

The tension peaked when the predatory bird almost succeeded in preying on him. In those terrifying seconds, Aqua glanced at the vast blue sky, as if calling him to keep fighting. The sky looked so beautiful, contrasting with the danger that threatened his life. When the bird finally dropped him back to the shore, Aqua's fear slowly turned into determination. For Aqua, the sea was not just a destination, but a symbol of hope and a new life that he had to achieve despite the dangers.

Resolution (ending)

Aqua managed to survive against predatory birds and reached the ocean. However, as he was about to swim across the ocean, he found another turtle entangled in plastic waste on the coast and tried to help it. Unfortunately, fate had other plans, and the turtle could not be saved. This scene conveys the message that not everyone can survive in the face of obstacles, Aqua managed to overcome the obstacle thanks to his hope. In the end, Aqua continued with his original goal of reach the safety of the ocean.

3. Character Development

At first, Aqua was depicted as small, fragile, and struggling to keep up with the other baby turtles. The journey to the sea felt so difficult, filled with predators and human waste blocking his path. Aqua almost gave in to fear, but each obstacle awakened his hope. In the end, Aqua found the courage to survive, even showing compassion by trying to help another turtle entangled in plastic. This growth reflects the central message of Hope: that even the weakest can find strength, and in the midst of danger, hope becomes the light guiding the way to life.

4. Visual Style & Cinematography

In Hope (2020), the animation depicts the coastline, the ocean, and the waves. Small details such as plastic wrappers scattered on the sand and Aqua's small fin movements symbolise how difficult it is for him, but also highlight his determination. The sparkling blue colour of the sea is depicted as a light of hope, contrasting with the darkness of the threat of predators and human pollution. The camera zooms in on Aqua's eyes, showing both fear and growing courage. Meanwhile, the wide angle of the shot makes Aqua appear so small, as if the world is too big for him. However, as Aqua gets closer to the sea, the perspective begins to shift, and the ocean becomes a symbol of hope and survival.

5. Sound & Music

This 2020 short film has no dialogue, so emotions are conveyed through the sound of waves, the rustling of sand, and background music. The sound of sand rubbing and waves crashing emphasises the difficult journey Aqua must endure. The sound of plastic bottles bobbing in the water is jarring, creating a sense of discomfort while emphasising the threat of human pollution. The music becomes soft and hopeful as Aqua approaches the ocean, as if voicing his small courage. These small details draw us, the audience, into Aqua's struggle and sadness.

6. Dialogue & Language

Although Hope (2020) has no verbal dialogue, the film is rich in a ‘language’ that speaks to its audience. The intonation of natural sounds: the sound of waves, the rustling of sand, and the clinking of plastic create an emotional atmosphere. The squeaking sound of plastic being dragged by the waves is disturbing, as if emphasising the real threat to marine life. Expressions & gestures: Aqua's small, slow movements show vulnerability, while his gaze at the sea implies both fear and awe. His body movements as he struggles to save another turtle from the plastic entanglement are a meaningful ‘silent scream’.

7. Audience Connection

The short film Hope (2020) is very suitable for children, as the animation used is so appealing that it is easy for young audiences to understand. However, the message it conveys is not limited to children alone. Through the story of Aqua, a small turtle trying to reach the ocean, this film conveys an emotional experience that can be felt by all audiences about fear, threats, and the struggle to survive.

Hope (2020) creates tension through Aqua's struggle against predators and plastic waste, yet beneath this lies a deeply inspiring message. The story reminds us that every challenge in life, no matter how small we feel it is, can always be faced with courage. The value that is highlighted is hope, that ‘in the midst of darkness and threats, there is always a small light that can be a reason to keep going.’

In my opinion, this film teaches us to be brave in facing problems, even if they seem difficult and frightening. Just as Aqua keeps moving forward despite the obstacles, we are encouraged to believe that courage and hope can guide us towards a way out. Thus, Hope not only succeeds in presenting a visually stunning spectacle, but also a heartfelt reminder.

Exploring the Horror of The Red Sinden

Hi friends! 💗 Welcome back to my mini blog. How are you? Hope you’re doing well! This time, I want to share with you my number one favorite local webtoon that tells an Indonesian horror story. The story is related to Javanese culture that is still believed in today’s era.

Webtoon The Red Sinden by Rigelnaa is a local Indonesian horror webtoon. The story follows Susi, an office worker who accidentally becomes the victim of the Red Sinden’s curse.

The story begins when Susi joins a fun trip with her coworkers. During the trip, she gets lost and ends up at Ranu Astagiri, a lake that is actually forbidden for visitors. At the bottom of the lake lies a jewelry box containing a susuk konde, which serves as the seal of the Red Sinden’s spirit.

Without realizing the danger, Susi opens the box. As a result, the Red Sinden’s spirit attaches itself to her. From that moment on, every man who comes close to Susi dies tragically as their life energy is drained by the vengeful spirit.

Things get even worse when her coworkers begin to suspect her. They accuse Susi of using black magic or love charms to lure men, not knowing that everything happening is the result of the Red Sinden’s curse that now haunts her.

1. Characters

Susi

The main character and chosen victim of the Red Sinden. After unintentionally opening the jewelry box at Ranu Astagiri, she becomes possessed by the spirit, which causes a series of tragic deaths of men around her. Coming from a humble background, Susi is hardworking but socially withdrawn, making her seem mysterious to her coworkers.

Red Sinden

An evil spirit appearing as a woman in a red kebaya with pale skin and a terrifying smile. She was once a sinden (traditional singer) who died tragically after being betrayed and humiliated. Filled with hatred, her spirit was sealed inside the jewelry box with the susuk konde at the bottom of Ranu Astagiri.

Bayu
A kindhearted male nurse who accidentally gets involved in Susi’s curse. Even knowing the risks, he tries to help her break free from the Red Sinden. Bayu is caring, patient, and logical, but slowly gets dragged into the dark mystery of Ranu Astagiri.

Winda

The younger sister of one of the Red Sinden’s victims. Winda has a spiritual sight that allows her to see spirits. Unlike others who avoid Susi, she feels pity for her and tries to help. Her ability to communicate with spirits makes her the key, though it often drains her physically and mentally.

Mbah Cokro
An elder and guardian of Ranu Astagiri. He knows the origins of the Red Sinden and how the spirit was sealed. Wise and deeply knowledgeable in Javanese tradition and mysticism, he guides Susi, Bayu, and Winda through the horrors of the curse.

2. Setting

a. Ranu Astagiri – Supernatural Horror

A quiet lake hidden deep in the forest, far from human activity. Its surface looks calm like glass, but beneath lies a chilling, sinister aura. This is where Susi accidentally opens the jewelry box and unleashes the Red Sinden.

b. Susi’s Office – Social Horror
The workplace becomes a symbol of social isolation. Once a safe place, it turns into a space full of tension and suspicion. Her coworkers accuse her of using black magic after several men die mysteriously around her.

c. Mental Hospital – Psychological Horror
The climax of psychological tension. As Susi’s condition worsens under the influence of the Red Sinden, she ends up being treated in a mental hospital. It becomes a space between “sanity” and “madness,” reflecting Susi’s struggle between reality and the spirit’s control.

3. Plot & Style

        The Red Sinden
has a plot that is smooth yet thrilling, like slowly riding a roller coaster before being hit with a terrifying climax at the end. The language used is simple and easy for readers to understand. Beyond the horror, the story teaches us the importance of helping those in need, because sometimes we might be their last hope.

4. Personal Reactions

In my opinion, The Red Sinden by Rigelnaa truly succeeds in bringing out the unique Indonesian horror atmosphere that we rarely find in other webtoons. What I find most interesting is how the story combines Javanese myths with modern life, making it feel both familiar and frightening at the same time. The character Susi is very relatable as an ordinary person who suddenly has to face something beyond reason. I also like the presence of Bayu and Winda, which makes this story not only about horror, but also about humanity and struggle.

What I like most is that this story is not just about showing ghosts or curses to scare readers, but it also carries a deep moral message. From Susi’s experience, we can learn that empathy and care for others are truly important. Sometimes, people who seem “strange” or are avoided by others are actually struggling with invisible burdens. For me, this message is very relevant to our everyday life.

Overall, The Red Sinden is not only a mysterious horror story, but also a reflection on human relationships, culture, and empathy. This story managed to make me tense, shiver, and reflect at the same time. I became curious about how Susi’s story will end: will she be free from the curse and find happiness, or will she be further trapped in darkness? What is certain is that reading The Red Sinden has made me realize that local horror can be this powerful and meaningful. I hope that in the future there will be more webtoons that highlight Indonesian culture.

5. Criticism & Appreciation

One thing that I still find a bit inconvenient is the trakteer or subscription system to support the author of The Red Sinden. Unlike official Webtoon Originals where we can simply top up coins through the app, here we have to go through an external trakteer platform. This is understandable since The Red Sinden is still under Webtoon Canvas, yet it still makes the process of giving support feel less practical for readers, like taking a detour when the main road should have been open.

However, beyond this small technical drawback, I truly admire Rigelnaa’s courage as the author in bringing a horror story that carries the essence of Javanese culture. Blending traditional customs into a horror narrative is not an easy task, especially since cultural themes can often be sensitive. Yet through The Red Sinden, Rigelnaa manages to deliver it with respect (like weaving an ancient melody into a modern song) creating a story that is not only terrifying, but also meaningful and relevant for today’s readers.

Conclusion

The Red Sinden is not just an ordinary horror story with a terrifying ghost figure, but a tale that carries a deeper meaning about how humans should respect and support one another. Behind the fear that creeps in while reading, lies a strong reminder about the importance of empathy: that everyone may carry unseen wounds or burdens, and even a little kindness can mean the world to them.

The story also emphasizes that hatred and vengeance only give birth to more suffering, just as the Red Sinden herself embodies. On the other hand, characters like Bayu, Winda, and Mbah Cokro prove that hope will always exist when people choose to help instead of judge. This is what makes The Red Sinden more profound than just a horror story meant to scare or thrill, it becomes a mirror reflecting the values of humanity hidden beneath the shadows.

In the end, this tale invites us to wonder, Will Susi ever break free from the curse that binds her? or will she be swallowed further into the darkness? And is there perhaps a faint glimmer of redemption for the vengeful Red Sinden? These questions hang in the air like whispers in the night, urging us to keep reading until the very last page, to experience not only the chilling horror but also the timeless message of compassion that flickers like a candle in the dark.
